One of my goals for this new house is to really think through how I want each space to be used before designing it. I want every space to be thought through, used to the best of it’s ability. It’s important to me that every space firstly be functional for our family, but also to think about how I want to feel in every space and what I want it to cultivate. We’ve been having a lot of conversations about our family culture recently and I really want this home to inspire those things to easily happen in this new home.
One of the things we want most is to be outside more!
We want more land for a reason and it’s silly not to create a space that encourages us to be outside more! I think this farmhouse back porch design will seriously help us do that!! One of my biggest complaints is the bugs! (SO ridiculous coming from the wanna-be farm girl -soon to be moving out of the city. 😂) But for real – bugs are the worst and also – we don’t have a covered patio at all right now, so that in and of itself is going to be amazing!
There have been countless studies showing how country life reduces stress levels and my dream is to sit on my back porch as the sun rises, curled up with a wool blanket, hot tea and my prayer journal. Seriously. That’s my dream life. (simple living goals anyone?!?) I also see us out late as the sun sets with a fire going, drinks in hand, having great conversation with some friends. I see it being the place the kiddos and I sit together and talk, the place we have a good dinner around the table together. I want it to cultivate relationship and community.
From a practical standpoint, we need a space to sit and be outside barefoot without fear of chicken poop – but also a place for boots to come on and off before doing animal chores. I am also not a big fan of the summer heat ruining my patio furniture so I’m SO excited that this space will be 100% covered, surrounded by walls on three sides and screened in on the back.
I’m oh, so ready to sit out on these rockers! They’re actually stacked in boxes in my garage right now, just waiting for their new home!
Here’s the farmhouse back porch design plan!

Is there anything I’m missing? What would you change about your porch to encourage you go outside more??
